Vienna to Salzburg Train: Tickets, Times & ÖBB vs WESTbahn

Destination illustration; not a depiction of a specific train or station.
The Vienna to Salzburg train route offers direct services, but the operator determines the Vienna boarding station and ticket conditions. Compare ÖBB journeys from Wien Hbf with WESTbahn journeys from Westbahnhof where shown. Choose Salzburg Hbf as the rail endpoint, then add the journey to the Old Town or your hotel.
Direct trains make Vienna to Salzburg a straightforward journey, but the departure station and ticket rules depend on the operator. ÖBB long-distance services normally use Wien Hauptbahnhof (Wien Hbf) and Wien Meidling; WESTbahn services on this corridor use Wien Westbahnhof and Wien Hütteldorf. Start by choosing the station that fits your accommodation, then compare the complete fare and arrival time.

ÖBB Railjet or WESTbahn?
| Planning point | ÖBB | WESTbahn |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Vienna stations on this route | Wien Hbf and Wien Meidling | Wien Westbahnhof and Wien Hütteldorf |
| Arrival | Salzburg Hbf | Salzburg Hbf |
| Service | Direct long-distance trains, including Railjet and Railjet Xpress | Direct WESTbahn trains |
| Ticket checks | Standard, Sparschiene and other offers have different conditions | WestFlexpreis and WestSuperpreis have different conditions |
ÖBB advertises direct Vienna–Salzburg services generally twice an hour. Faster Railjet Xpress journeys can take around 2 hours 25 minutes; other departures take longer. The current WESTbahn timetable lists many Westbahnhof–Salzburg journeys at about 2 hours 30 minutes. These are planning references, not a promise for every travel date: check the actual departure, stops and duration.
Autumn 2026: WESTbahn has temporary changes between 7 September and 12 December, with some departures shortened to Linz or Wels on specified weekdays. The operator timetable reviewed on 26 October lists exceptions to these shortened or cancelled runs from 24 October to 1 November and from 5 to 12 December. Check the notice for your exact train and date; the exceptions do not remove every other engineering change. An onward destination printed in an older timetable does not establish that your selected train reaches Salzburg.
Choose the right Vienna station
Wien Hbf and Wien Westbahnhof are different stations in different parts of the city. A transfer between them requires local transport and extra time. Do not arrive at Hauptbahnhof with a Westbahnhof departure merely because both are described as “Vienna”. If a search displays several city stations, open the individual service and use the complete name on the ticket.
For travel starting at Vienna Airport, search from Flughafen Wien rather than assuming a city-station ticket covers the airport leg. Check whether the journey is direct or changes at Wien Hbf. Airport access is affected by major works in 2026–2027; the linked airport guide explains the current alternatives.
Fares: flexibility matters as much as price
ÖBB Sparschiene is a limited, train-specific advance fare. Ordinary Sparschiene tickets normally exclude voluntary exchanges and refunds. Sparschiene Komfort remains train-specific but includes a seat reservation and defined cancellation options. ÖBB Standard tickets offer different flexibility; their usual free-cancellation deadline is before the first day of validity, not simply before the train departs. Disruption-related passenger rights are separate from voluntary cancellation rules.
WESTbahn's WestFlexpreis permits travel on the chosen route and day under its conditions. WestSuperpreis is tied to the selected departure; using another WESTbahn train that day can require a supplement. Ordinary ÖBB and WESTbahn tickets are not interchangeable. Read the actual offer, including any seller charges, before paying. A published operator fare does not mean the same product is available through every booking site.
Seats, classes and luggage
On domestic Railjet journeys a seat reservation is generally optional, but useful for busy weekends, holidays or when sitting together matters. A travel ticket alone does not always allocate a seat. Railjet offers Economy, First and Business; layouts differ by train generation. Business needs the appropriate First Class ticket plus upgrade and includes a reservation.
WESTbahn has its own class names and reservation products. Its free WestFixplatz offer applies to eligible direct online bookings made more than three hours before departure, subject to availability. Check the product actually included in your booking instead of assuming every seller includes it.
Keep luggage in the designated racks without blocking doors or aisles. Bikes and assistance needs require separate checks for the selected service. If you need a wheelchair space or boarding assistance, arrange it with the operator in advance.
Arriving in Salzburg and planning the return
Salzburg Hbf is the city's principal railway station, not the Old Town itself. Allow time for the local connection to your accommodation or sightseeing. For a day trip, choose the return service before filling the day with activities and leave a margin to get back to the station. A late arrival does not automatically allow a train-specific ticket to be used on a different service.
Before you book
- Select the actual travel date and exact Vienna station.
- Check that the result is direct and reaches Salzburg Hbf.
- Compare total price, fare flexibility and seat arrangements.
- Confirm passenger details, luggage or assistance requirements and the return plan.
- Check operator disruption information and station departure boards before travel.
The AustriaTrain journey search shows the options currently returned for your date. Only the displayed offer and its conditions establish what is available to book.
Salzburg day trip from Vienna or an overnight stop?
For a day trip, choose a return and subtract both rail journeys and station transfers from the available day. An overnight stop can fit an onward Hallstatt excursion or a later trip to Innsbruck. If leaving a train for a longer Salzburg visit, do not assume a train-specific through ticket permits continuation on a different departure. Plan the stop and its fare before purchase.
Compare the Salzburg to Vienna return journey
When comparing the outbound and return legs, check each one separately rather than assuming they match. Journey times vary by departure — ÖBB's faster Railjet Xpress timings apply to some trains while others take longer — and your fare may be tied to the exact service. Confirm that the return train actually reaches your chosen Vienna station and that your ticket conditions allow it.
